One of the projects I have worked on is Bastille Linux, helping to add Department of Defense (DoD) compliance and the assessment function as part of the Fort Knox for Linux (FKL) project. The goal of FKL was to produce a set of guidelines for hardening Linux which would follow applicable DoD Instructions, and the tools to implement and assess a system's compliance with these guidelines. Our work was funded by the Technical Support Working Group of the US government, and peformed under contract with the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SSC) San Diego, a field activity of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR).

Instead of writing new tools from scratch, we decided to add the required functionality to Bastille. Jay Beale, the lead developer of the Bastille project, was very enthusiastic about adding the assessment capability, and welcomed our participation. His help in integrating our changes was invaluable.
